It’s obvious that ice cream isn’t the most nutritious food for you. However, some days, ice cream is exactly what you need. Life is about balance, and as long as you’re consistently eating a nutritious diet, having a dessert here & there won’t hurt you.
Ice cream is my favorite kind of sweet. We all need a sugar fix once in a while! Any day I’d choose ice cream over doughnuts, cake, pie, or cupcakes.
It’s important to enjoy what you indulge in. (It’s important to enjoy any food!) Ice cream is my personal favorite, but if cupcakes, for example, are what you enjoy best, then, by all means, go for them.
Here are the top six best ice cream places along the North Shore. They are in order from what I like best!
Where to Find the Best Ice Cream in Chicago’s North Shore
1. Ben & Jerry’s (Glenview)
The best thing about Ben & Jerry’s the unique flavors they have. You simply won’t be able to find “Oat of this Swirled” somewhere else! They also believe in marriage equality and climate justice, which are always good things to support 🙂 Additionally, this Ben & Jerry’s franchise in Glenview serves the vegan, non-dairy ice creams. One of my favorite flavors is “Truffle Kerfuffle,” which is a vanilla ice cream with pecans & chocolate.
2. Homer’s (Wilmette)
This classic North Shore ice cream shop is must-stop. Homer’s has been around since 1935, and consistently make delicious, homemade ice cream. I love supporting a community business! Their ice cream is always a favorite, and I love their “Chocolate Chocolate Chip,” which is chocolate-based ice cream with added chocolate chips. It is clear I love chocolate!
3. Oberweis (Glenview)
My favorite thing about Oberweis ice cream is the creaminess of it. You can easily tell Oberweis cares about the quality of their milk! At this location in Glenview, the employees will bring your ice cream out to you when you sit down 🙂 It is a warm, sunny, and playful environment with checkers on their tables! The “Raspberry Chocolate Chip” ice cream is amazing!
4. Insomnia Cookies (Evanston)
This shop is located at several college campus’ around the country. Insomnia Cookies delivers warm, delicious cookies until 3:30 AM! They offer classic cookies and ice cream. My favorite is to put together a “‘Witch,” which means a cookie & ice cream sandwich. I’d recommend one chocolate chip cookie, one M&M cookie, and vanilla ice cream in the middle 😛
5. Graeter’s (Winnetka)
This shop has its roots in Ohio and started way back in 1868! Graeter’s offers rich, delicious flavors 🙂 They also have low-glycemic options (half the sugar), which are extremely tasty. I love the “Bourbon Pecan” ice cream, and next time I want to try the “Buckeye”!
6. Andy’s (Evanston)
Andy’s is a classic if you’re in downtown Evanston. They offer a variety of menu items, such as malks, shakes, and banana splits. My favorite, however, are the concretes! I love the Triple Chocolate 🙂
Other places to get ice cream
- Potbelly milkshakes & cookies (multiple locations)
- Hartigan’s (Evanston)
- Dairy Queen (Wilmette)
Ice cream at home!
Serving ice cream at home is always an option! Recently I have been loving a cone with my ice cream, so I simply bought sugar cones at the grocery store and make them myself 🙂 My favorite brands are Halo Top or Talenti Gelato. If you prefer ice cream without the cone, try making sundaes!
